Apple and pear grower

Peter Ham

Since 1996, Peter Ham has been active in the fruit farm that he took over from his father. The majority of the crop consists of pears, which he mainly grows using the v-hedge system. As is the norm in Flevoland, Peter’s plots are flat and spaciously arranged, ideal for efficient growing. Good crop protection is extremely important, according to Peter. “We believe it’s important to make sure crop protection is as effective as possible, and do more than most in this respect. We're striving to be among the very best in cultivation.”

The variety in his work is what he enjoys the most. “As I’m running a business, I have to deal with a lot of different aspects. I sometimes say; you have to be a jack-of-all-trades. A bit of a manager, a bit of an accountant, and a bit of working and dealing with employees. You need to be able to adapt when required, and plan ahead.” Peter also enjoys the different seasons. “Each season is different, each year is different too." One season in the lives of Peter and his sons was certainly very bleak; when Peter’s wife died. Her loss will always be felt, yet they’ve managed to get through a very challenging period. Peter is very proud of how well his sons are doing, both personally and professionally. Together, they picked up where they left off. Peter is building a fantastic business that will provide numerous opportunities should his children decide to follow in his footsteps in the future.
